Almost every garage floor quote in Victoria eventually comes down to this question, and it is usually asked as though you have to pick one. You mostly do not. On the floors we build, epoxy and polyaspartic are different layers of the same system, doing different jobs.
What epoxy is good at
Epoxy is a two-part thermoset that cures hard, thick and extremely well bonded. On a diamond-ground slab it flows into the profile and builds real film thickness, which is what gives a professional floor the solid, slightly cushioned feel underfoot rather than the thin painted feel of a kit. It fills minor imperfections, it takes a heavy flake broadcast without drowning, and per litre it is the least expensive part of the build.
It has two weaknesses that matter here. It ambers under ultraviolet light, so any epoxy exposed to direct sun will yellow over the years. And it cures slowly when it is cold, which in an unheated Victoria garage in February can stretch a job out by days.
What polyaspartic is good at
Polyaspartic is an aliphatic polyurea. Practically, that means it holds its colour under sunlight, resists chemicals and abrasion very well, and cures fast across a wide temperature range, including temperatures where epoxy is still thinking about it. It also goes down thinner, so it is a topcoat rather than a build coat.
Its weaknesses are working time and tolerance. The pot life is short, which means an installer has to know what they are doing and cannot stop halfway through a bay. And it is much less forgiving of a slab that was not prepared properly, because there is less film thickness to hide behind.
Why a Victoria garage usually wants both
Our climate is mild, damp and low on direct sun angle for much of the year. That combination pushes in two directions at once.
- Moisture in the slab is the dominant risk, so the system needs good bond and real film thickness. That is epoxy, over a moisture-tolerant primer if the reading calls for it.
- Summer sun through an open garage door is enough to amber bare epoxy, and a car parked wet on it all winter will find any weakness in the wear layer. That is polyaspartic.
So: primer where needed, pigmented epoxy base, flake broadcast into it if you are having flake, then a UV-stable polyaspartic or urethane topcoat. The epoxy never sees the sun and the polyaspartic never has to be the whole floor.
When a single-product floor makes sense
Two honest exceptions. A full polyaspartic system, primer and all, is genuinely useful when the schedule is the constraint, because it can be walked on the same day and driven on the next. It costs more in material and it demands better preparation, but if you need the garage back it is the right trade.
And a solid-colour epoxy with no topcoat is defensible in a fully enclosed garage that gets no direct light, in a colour where ambering would not be visible anyway. It is the cheaper build and it is not wrong, it just has a shorter list of situations where it is right.
What actually decides how long it lasts
Neither product. Preparation does. A polyaspartic system over an acid-etched slab will fail faster than a modest epoxy over a properly ground one, every time. The moisture reading, the grind profile, the crack routing and the vacuuming are what determine whether you are looking at this floor again in three years or in fifteen.
